The #NFLDraft is over, a majority of the rookies have signed their deals, and teams are beginning OTA's. Teams are now virtually set, with a few FA signings, trades, and unfortunately injuries to happen before the season begins. Barring any major injuries or changes, we can start to predict who you're going need to target in this years fantasy draft!
Below is our top six fantasy QB's for 2019.
6. Baker Mayfield
Some of you may seem surprised to have Baker this high up on the fantasy list this year, but bear with me. He had an unfortunate start to the year, having Hue Jackson award Tyrod Taylor (Don't worry, I almost forgot about him too) before the preseason, and then swapping head coaches partway through the season. Despite that, Baker went 6-7 in his 13 starts, and ended up #16 amongst QB's in fantasy scoring last year.
He faired well in the air, throwing for 3725 yards, 27 tds, 14 ints, and a 63.8% completion percentage. The Browns made efforts to but a better supporting cast around Mayfield. They signed Kareem Hunt in the early offseason, and traded for Odell Beckham Jr. With those two, Njoku, Landry, and Nick Chubb, Baker has quite a few weapons at his disposal.
He has some difficult divisional games against the Steelers and Ravens, which will be a battle, but also has some easier games against the Jets, Titans, Dolphins, and Bills. Overall with his new additions on offense, a year under his belt, and the new regime leading the team, I see Baker putting up big numbers this year, landing him as our number 6 QB.
5. Matt Ryan
Matty Ice never gets enough love. He's like the guy that takes the girl out shopping and on dates, but get friend-zoned for the popular guy in school. He seems to live in the shadows of the Rodgers, Brees, and Brady's of the league, however, the last few years he has played just as dominate as they have. In fact, comparing to Rodgers last two healthy years (2016 and 2018), statistically he's been better. Posting a higher completion percentage, more yards, and more TD's.
Last year Ryan posted 4924 yards, 35tds, 7ints, and 69.4% completion percentage, landing him at the #2 overall fantasy QB last year, trailing only #PatrickMahomes and his MVP season. The Falcons don't have nearly as tough of a schedule, playing only 3 teams with a top 5 defense last year, and games against the Titans, Cardinals, and Buccaneers, which should pose some high scoring opportunities. Also watch for the two games against the Saints, and the Panthers, which always seem to be shootouts.
With the easier schedule, and another year connecting with Julio Jones, Calvin Ridley, and Austin Hooper, I see Ryan putting up another big year. It's hard to not push him higher on the list, but right now I have him as the #5 fantasy QB going into 2019.
4. Deshaun Watson
It's like he never got hurt. Watson had a slow start to the season last year but finished strong, landing him at #4 overall fantasy qb's for 2018. There was a lot of speculation on how he would hold up during the year, with people comparing the situation to the RG3 injury. Watson proved them wrong by playing in all 16 games, throwing for 4165 yards, 26 tds, 9 ints, and a 68.3% completion percentage. Oh yeah, he also put up 550 yards on the ground with 5 tds. Doesn't sound like much but thats an additional 80 fantasy points!
It's hard to dispute the numbers he's put up, and argue he won't be a top 6 QB this year. After all, if he has DeAndre Hopkins, he's going to be putting up numbers. His other weapons don't excite me as much, Fuller is a decent option if he's healthy, Keke Coutee and Jordan Thomas are young with potential, and Miller and Foreman should provide some solid relief. They have a much tougher schedule overall, but Watson has proved he can put up big against good teams. I have him landing where he left off last year, at #4 fantasy QB.
3. Drew Brees
Surprise, surprise. Drew Brees, a kid (baby goat), makes the list. Last year was statistically his worst year with the Saints, and the first time since 2005 that he didn't throw for over 4000 yards (3992 in 2018). That's 13 years, guys. Oh and did I mention, he still came in 8th overall for fantasy QBs in 2018! Think about that, his worst year in 13 years was better than 24 other QBs in the league.
Brees had 3992 yards, 32 tds, 5 ints, and 74.4% completion percentage. 74.4%! He's accurate, he has a cannon, and he has weapons. Thomas is one of the best WR's in the game, Kamara is a top RB and arguably the best dual purpose RB in the league, Jared Cook, and the still speedy Ted Ginn Jr.
The Saints are also playing with a chip on their shoulder. Remember the championship game against the Rams last year? The one where Robey-Coleman hit Lee just a hair before the ball got there? I'd feel bad if they didn't cheap shot and have even worse blow calls against the Vikings in the 09' championship game. People don't forget. Just like we still have that chip after 10 years, Brees will have that this year. That fire along with his undeniable talent, will help him put up big numbers and land at #3 best fantasy QB this year.
2. Andrew Luck
There were a lot of questions going into last year. People wondered not only would Luck be able to play at the level he had before the injury, but if he would ever play again. Well he shut those people up real quick last year by posting the best season of his career. Luck finished in 5th for fantasy QBs in 2018, posting 4593 yards, 39 tds, 15 ints, and a 67.3% completion percentage. He also lead the Colts to a division title and playoff berth!
Luck is a purebred passer and has some of the best fundamentals in the league. Meaning, he is able to put up good numbers and has a chance to lead his team to victory against any defense. Doesn't hurt to have weapons like TY Hilton, Jack Doyle, Eric Ebron, Marlon Mack, and Chester Rodgers. With all the pieces in place, Luck is poised to have another big year. I have him putting up even better numbers than last year, moving from #5 QB to #2.
1. Patrick Mahomes
Another shocker here, Mahomes at #1! Well there is honestly no reason to not assume the most electric QB in the league, MVP, and near Super Bowl contender won't put up big numbers like last year. There is the chance the Madden Curse brings down his numbers, which has already taken affect with the Tyreek Hill case.
Last year was Mahomes first year as a starter, and it was a fun one to watch. Posting 5097 yards, 50 tds, 12 ints, and a 66.0% completion percentage. His ability to get out of the pocket, and throw dimes on the run was one of the reasons he was so successful last year. Not to mention that he can fling the ball 75yds+ down the field accurately.
Losing Tyreek Hill is going to hurt, and the departure of Chris Conely is a big loss, but they still have talent. Kelce is a clear cut favorite to lead the way for the Chiefs, especially with Hill out. Watkins and Williams are also solid pieces that will give some support along the way for Mahomes. Its not great after that, but great QBs make the players around them better, you can expect nothing less this year from Mahomes. We have him keeping the title and staying at #1 among fantasy QBs in 2019.
Soon we will be posting our top RBs, WRs, TEs, Kickers, and DST for the upcoming year. Stay tuned for our top players to keep an eye out for the 2019 season!
